As we say goodbye to 2016 and prepare to welcome 2017 we should remind ourselves that for some, the new year brings a whole new level of stress. For those affected by extreme poverty, gang violence, unemployment and drug use; education is the key to rise out of their circumstances. But even with the basic right to education, these learners and their families often face their own set of challenges which many of us take for granted. Things like stationery, a nutritious meal and even a positive spirit are often difficult to attain.
This year as an alternative to a greatly appreciated and widely sought after Christmas Party, Ark SA has decided to create a longer lasting impact in the lives of those most affected by the injustices of our society. Along our kindness journey through 2016, we encountered a school in Coronationville that caters to 1300 learners which come from the poorest part of their community and decided to pool our resources to assist them with the basics for their 2017 school year.
One of the HOD’s at Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville has told us that when some families struggle to pay the school fees of R500 per annum, things like pens and pencils become a luxury which some of them just can’t afford. As a result, throughout the year, the learners share stationery during the school day which, as you can imagine, becomes a distraction these students can do without.
In order to address this challenge we have launched our Back to School Project for 2017. We have partnered with Kores Stationery who have discounted their products to assist us in assembling a gift pack for all 1300 students at Bernard Isaacs Primary School. Each pack will consist of pencils, pens, a highlighter, an eraser, a glue stick, colouring pencils, a ruler, a sharpener, a mixed colour pack of fineliners/pastels, and a book bag. In addition we wanted to leave a kindness footprint in this school and on the students hearts that would remain for the entire year by creating an Acts of Random Kindness Diary that reminds them every day how special they are and that they too can make a positive difference in their community, one act of random kindness at a time. We have established that the best tool we could create to remind people on a daily basis what kindness means, how special they are, and what they could do to brighten someone’s day, is to use a tool they need to look at every day; and thus the Ark SA 2017 diary was formed.
Each pack is valued at R500, however, through the tireless efforts of the Ark fairies and their corporate partners we are happy to announce that we are able to offer the packs at R300 per student.
As you can see our window of opportunity to make this project a success is quite small, but we hope that with your help and the help of your friends and family members, perhaps we might still be able to fulfil on our promise to help these students in January 2017.
Contact us by inboxing us your email address for more information and donating details. We’ll continue to post updates on our Facebook page of our progress right through to delivery of the gift packs.
We hope each one of you are able to touch the lives these students; you might not get to see the direct results of your act of kindness, but the ripple of positivity you send out will come back to you in abundance.
From all of us at Ark SA, to all of you and your loved ones, we wish you a wonderfully kind festive season.
